Westhampton Beach Elementary School held a ribbon-cutting for its new outdoor Project Fit activity center, aka the Pit, on the breezy afternoon of Oct. 4.
During the ceremony, school administrators thanked the Peconic Bay Medical Center and Project Fit America for providing grant funding for the new fitness center, which will be used during gym periods. A group of students demonstrated proper use of the equipment that will be used, along with a set of lesson plans. The equipment includes pull-up bars, a pole climb, parallel and vault bars, sit-up stations and a horizontal ladder.
The new fitness program is being coupled with the district’s healthy eating program, in which students are learning to grow fresh foods in the school’s greenhouse.
