Summer 2012 Reading Assignment

Dear Students:

Happy Summer!!

Did you know that reading over the summer significantly improves your performance in school and on standardized tests such as Regents exams and the SAT?  Studies show that students who read during their summer vacation have significantly better grades in all of their subjects throughout the school year. All students are required to read at least two books over the summer to keep “your head in the game.”

How does it work for Summer Reading?    Both books must be chosen from the appropriate grade level and subject lists, which are available by clicking the links below.  Be sure to choose from the Annotated Summer Reading List for your grade level.
  • All students are required to read one book from the English list except for 10 Honors students and 12 AP Literature students, who have already received assignments from their teachers.
  • All students are required to read one book from the Social Studies list except for AP World History students and AP US History students, who have assignments of their own.
  • Students with IEPs may choose to complete an alternate assignment, available by clicking the links below. If you have any questions, please call the Guidance Office.
All students will be assessed on their chosen books when they return to school in September.  This will count as a test grade for the first quarter in English and Social Studies.  For students who cannot access books at the public library, or who need assistance, the high school library will be open as follows:

8:00 am to 3:00 pm on July 10, July 25, August 20 and August 28
12:30 pm to 4:00 pm on August 6 and August 7

Happy Reading!! We look forward to seeing you in September!

Sincerely,

The English Department & the Social Studies Department
