With yarn and knitting needles in hand, Westhampton Beach Elementary School fifth graders are learning to knit through a collaborative art project led by their art teacher, Sarah Drake.

Every fifth grader, whether in-person or remote, is knitting a swatch. The completed swatches will be sewn together to create a large textile.

The knitting lesson is part of a unit on textiles in which students have been exploring the works of textile artists locally and worldwide.
