Westhampton Beach Physical Education 2012-2013 Course Outline: Physical Education focuses on the physical and mental aspects of living a healthy lifestyle on a daily basis. Students will be participating in a wide range of units that focus on building positive relationships while fostering a cooperative learning environment. Each student is required to give their best effort and participate in each unit throughout the school year. Lockers: Each student will receive a physical education locker to safely keep personal belongings, such as phys ed attire (Hurricane shirt and shorts) and room to store books and computers during class time. Daily Routine: Students will have 5 minutes upon entering the locker room to change into their phys ed attire and find their squad spot in the gymnasium. Once every student is in their squad spot, attendance will be taken and stretching will take place. Students will have 5 minutes at the end of each class period to change out of their phys ed attire and proceed to their next period class. Students are expected to enter and exit the locker room on time during each class period. Grading Policy: Students are graded in physical education class based upon three areas: Participation- 50% Preparation- 25% Cooperation and Skill Improvement- 25% Participation- Participating in each activity to the best of one's ability while working together with teammates and always displaying good sportsmanship. Preparation- Students must change from school attire into the Hurricane Phys Ed t-shirt and shorts, which can be purchased through the Westhampton Beach PTA during lunch periods on designated days. If you do not have your Hurricane shirt and shorts, a white or gray t-shirt and green shorts are acceptable until Hurricane shirt and shorts can be attained. Cooperation and Skill Improvement- Following directions, displaying good sportsmanship, and working cooperatively with fellow classmates throughout each unit. A unit quiz, which will be given at the end of each unit, falls into this category. Attendance and Exemption: A student can be exempt from physical education if he/she has a valid doctor's note, which states the dates that the student is unable to participate in physical education. If a student is physically exempt from physical education, he/she must still attend class and complete written assignments. Extra Help: Any student who wishes to attend extra help for physical education class can do so from 2:20-2:40 every Monday-Thursday. Extra help time can also be used to make up missed quizzes or written assignments. Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge: Students will participate in the Presidential Physical Fitness Challenge throughout the school year in order to earn either National or Presidential Fitness recognition. The following fitness tests will be administered throughout the school year: Sit-Ups Pull-Ups/Flexed Arm Hang 1 Mile Run Sit and Reach Shuttle Run I am looking forward to a fun school year in Physical Education Class! -Mr. Sheppard |
